Mumbai-Goa highway to be ready before Ganesh Utsav

One lane of the Mumbai-Goa highway will be ready before Ganesh Utsav, chief minister Ekanth Shinde has said. The Mumbai-Goa highway has been in the works for a long time. Thousands of people travel from Mumbai to Konkan for the festival. If it becomes functional by then, this journey will be much better for the travellers.

“Our public works department minister Ravindra Chavan is on a visit to ensure the work is started though the highway comes under the National Highway Authority of India. Preparations have been completed. Before the Ganesh festival one lane of the highway will be made motorable,” said the chief minister.

No free flags for the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign this year

This Independence Day for the Har Ghar Tiranga Campaign, there will be no free flags. Last year the BMC provided the citizens with free flags, this year citizens need to buy the flag for Rs 25 from the post office. Flags are available for sale across the state in various post offices. The citizens can also buy it online at “The flags will also be made available at different societies, hospitals and at railway stations,” said chief general postmaster K.K Sharma.

Polluted river water kills 12 goats 

A livestock farmer witnessed the impact of a polluted river when his goats died in a short time after consuming the river water.

Buddha Mahtre, a livestock farmer, had taken his goats for feeding in the adjacent pasture. While passing through the Taloja river, the goats drank water from the overflowing river. A few minutes later he found his four goats dead and later the remaining six died. The goats were worth Rs 2.5 lakh.

Following the incident, a former corporator Arvind Mhatre said, “For nearly six years, I have been warning both Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) and Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) about the massive destruction to the ecosystem and the Kasardi river due to unrestrained release of chemical effluents directly.” The incident was reported to various authorities at the Panvel Municipal Corporation and a postmortem of the goats was done.

Mumbai traffic police declare No Honking Day

The Mumbai traffic police declared “No Honking Day” on the 9th and 16th of August 2023 to curb the unnecessary trend of honking among motorists. Honking produces noise pollution and has severe impact on health. On 9th August, the traffic police recorded over 2000 complaints for honking. “Maximum cases were reported in Chembur, Ghatkopar and Dadar on Wednesday,” said joint commissioner traffic Pravin Padwal. The No Honking drive will be carried out on 16th August again.

Mahim Causeway Bridge to be taken down for renovation

The 60-year-old bridge that connects Mahim with S V road will be taken down for renovation. The bridge is located over the Mithi River, part of the Mahim causeway and is one of the important junctions in the city. This bridge connects the suburbs to the city and is a crucial link for office-going people. The work will be done in phases and completed in the next three years. A study conducted in 2015 states that 50000 vehicles use this bridge on a daily basis. The project is approved by The Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA).
