BMC starts using reserve stock to meet city’s water needs

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) started using its reserve stock of water from Thursday to meet the city’s growing water requirements as the soaring temperatures have caused the lakes, from where the city draws water, to dry up, with the overall water level in the lakes dipping to 10.9 per cent — equivalent to 1.74 lakh million litres. In addition to the reserved stock, the water stock of Mumbai is 15.97 lakh million litres, which is approximately 18 per cent of the overall quantity.

Major fire breaks out in Mumbai’s Zaveri Bazar

Over 50 people, who were trapped, were safely evacuated by the Mumbai fire brigade  after a level three fire broke out in a ground-plus-six-floored building at Zaveri Bazar area in Mumbai’s Kalbadevi, in the early hours of Friday. There were no casualties, however, a 40-year-old man sustained injuries. The fire erupted at around 1.38am in the building located on Dhamki Street near Mumbadevi temple.

The fire spread from the ground floor to the fifth floor of the six-storeyed building. Part of ceiling portion on the first and second floor and part of the staircase had fallen, making it difficult for firefighting measures. As a precautionary measure, firefighting operation was carried out from outside of the building.

BMC to get 45km internal roads at Aarey for upkeep; no tree cutting for repairs

Maharashtra chief minister Eknath Shinde has given approval for handing over 45 km of internal roads in Aarey Milk Colony area to the civic body for their maintenance and repair. The state government has said no trees shall be cut for maintenance and repair work.

The state on Thursday informed the Bombay high court of the handover nod. It said the Urban Development Department (UDD) has written to the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) stating that the Aarey CEO and BMC Commissioner will jointly decide which roads to be handed over to the civic body. The UDD also said that it would be the responsibility of the BMC to avail environmental clearances if required for the necessary repair work keeping the balance of ecology in mind.

BMC to set up urban farms at 250 schools; organic veggies to be used in midday meals

In an effort to promote rooftop vegetable gardening and include its fresh produce in the midday meals, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has planned to set up ‘urban rooftop farms’ at 250 of its public schools over the next year.

This will be along the lines of two successful organic farming projects that have been established at the Mumbai Public School in Collector’s Colony, Chembur, and the Scouts and Guides District Centre, in Powai.

Mumbai Horror : Man kills, chops live-in partner 

A 32-year-old woman in suburban Mumbai was killed by her live-in partner of 9 years who then used an electric saw to hack her body into so many parts that the police couldn’t pin a number. For three days after the alleged murder, Manoj Sane, 56, tried to dispose of the body. In his frantic efforts to evade detection he pressure-cooked some body parts, roasted others, and ground some more in a mixer and fed them to stray dogs.

Girl Raped, Murdered In Govt-Run Hostel; Accused Found Dead On Railway Track

An 18-year-old girl was tragically raped and murdered at the Savitribai Phule Women’s Hostel, a state government-run facility located near the Police Gymkhana on Marine Drive. The alleged perpetrator, Prakash Kanojia, a 33-year-old security guard, later took his own life on the railway tracks between Marine Lines station and Churchgate. Kanojia, who was married and resided in Colaba, was the prime suspect in this horrifying crime.
